Terrain. A compact riverfront district on flat ground where Centre Street meets the water — a tight cluster of blocks pressed between the river bank and the tower core immediately south.

Wind. Chinook belt, with the added complication of the tower core to the south — gusts that cross downtown arrive here broken and shifty, and the open river corridor gives the west wind a clear run along the bank.

Light. The district reads best in low-angle light, when the Centre Street Bridge and the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre roof throw long shadows across the blocks; summer evenings hold that light longest, and late-summer smoke is the main threat to contrast.

On the ground.
