    The QE2 Corridor

The Highway 2 towns north of Calgary — Crossfield, Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds, Sundre. Agricultural land, small-town commercial, and the quarter-section geometry that only reads from directly overhead. A field boundary is invisible at eye level and obvious at 120 metres.

    The airspace across QE2 Corridor

Predominantly uncontrolled Class G airspace, with local aerodromes at several of the towns creating their own small constraints. The corridor is checked per town rather than treated as uniform.

    What that means in practice.

5 locations in this corridor are flown as routine work. None normally require a NAV CANADA authorisation. The binding constraint in this corridor is weather and daylight, not paperwork.

Aerodromes in play. Olds-Didsbury aerodrome, Airdrie aerodrome, Sundre aerodrome. Each has a circuit that is plotted before a local flight, because uncontrolled airspace is not the same thing as unoccupied airspace.

Mobilisation. Between 40 and 80 minutes from the Calgary base. The nearer locations are same-day; the furthest are scheduled against the weather window rather than the drive.

    Conditions across the corridor.

    Carstairs

Level to gently rolling grain country on the corridor plain — quarter sections running unbroken to every horizon, with the town grid and its shelter trees the only vertical interruption in the frame.

Chinook belt, and open. West wind crosses the level country around Carstairs with nothing to slow it; on a chinook day the difference between the average and the gusts is what decides whether the flight happens.

    Crossfield

Open corridor prairie on the survey grid, flat enough that grain bins and the Crossfield Agriplex read as skyline, with the shallow upper reach of Nose Creek threading past town.

Chinook belt on open ground. Nose Creek is too shallow to shelter anything, so wind arrives at Crossfield at full strength; the calm hours of a chinook day are usually the early ones.

    Didsbury

Gently rolling grain and hay country, with the shallow valley of the Rosebud River winding through the district — low relief that only reads from the air when the light is low.

Chinook belt. The Rosebud River valley is too slight to funnel or shelter the wind, so forecasts for the open prairie translate directly to conditions over town.

    Olds

Dry, open grain country on the corridor plain — a large town grid set among full quarter sections, with the small trial fields around Olds College breaking the pattern at its edge.

Chinook belt. Open ground in every direction means no terrain shelters an Olds site, and none accelerates the wind either — the regional forecast is the site forecast.

    Locations in QE2 Corridor.

    QE2 Corridor questions, answered.

Do you need airspace authorisation across QE2 Corridor?

Generally no. The locations covered in QE2 Corridor sit in uncontrolled Class G airspace. The specific address is still confirmed against NAV Drone before every flight, because airspace boundaries do not follow town limits.

How far is QE2 Corridor from the Calgary base?

Between 40 and 80 minutes, depending on the location. The nearer locations are same-day; the furthest are scheduled against the weather window rather than the drive.

What gets photographed most in QE2 Corridor?

Chiefly agricultural, commercial retail, municipal infrastructure. The subject mix drives the shot list: a corridor of acreage estates needs boundary and approach coverage, where an industrial corridor needs repeatable overhead passes flown from identical coordinates.
